  • 3 layout preferences (fixed, fluid and jello).
  • 3 font-size preference (medium, large and extra large).
  • 2 font rendering preferences (rendered Trade Gothic, non-rendered system Helvetica).
  • 2 menu position preferences (left and right).

Dont forget to check out the site.. The screenshot does not do it proper justice. http://typo.leevigraham.com

I hate you so much. My friend and I were stressing out yesterday as we combed over your site. Enjoy your laptop trophy.

  3. domosapien said about 1 hour later:

This is truly a gorgeous theme. From the polished design to the great functionality. If I had known you were creating such a wonderful theme I would have spent much more time on mine. I think this design may rival some A-league CSS sites. Good work.

  4. steve said about 2 hours later:

Definitely gets my vote. Looks great and there’s some cool, stuff going on in there.

  5. Mark said about 2 hours later:

hopscotch, don’t count your chickens yet… it all depends on what the judges deem as relevant measurement characterists.

As nice as this site looks it can’t get my vote, when I load it it spikes Safari up to a constant 13-20% CPU during the entire duration of the page view. I also admire the attempts to design with XHTML 1.1, but when being so bold your demo site would look better off if it didn’t validate with errors.

  6. Nick said about 3 hours later:

    Great work man!

  7. Leevi Graham said about 3 hours later:

Hey Mark, Thanks for your feedback about Safari. I only had a Mac about an hour or two a week for testing this theme. Why do you think I entered this comp :)? As a consequence I didnt notice a potential CPU spike. If some one could confirm that this is happening and a possible reason I would be happy to fix it.

As far as the validation.. it was just a little slip up in my demo content, nothing to do with the theme itself.. Take another look ;).

    Cheers Leevi

Oh one other bonus. There is also styling for gravatars and preview comments included in the css. The CSS is pretty well documented so if your feeling brave it would not be hard to modify the theme for a trunk build. I am planning to update the theme for the next release of Typo which I believe will be shortly after this comp finishes.

  9. Chris Johnson said about 3 hours later:

Wow… great stuff. You have my vote. Great stuff Leevi

  10. Sebastian Gräßl said about 4 hours later:

Very nice theme, but i have to confirm the high CPU spikes, i reached up to 30% on my mac mini. When the theme was in develpment i often reached 50% or more, so we can say it got better.

My thoughts about this, theme: Hte Design is cool very cool, but it has so much things, too much, i think.

  11. Richard Stanley said about 4 hours later:

This theme is brilliant- I was considering entering, and to be honest I’m glad I didn’t waste my time after seeing this piece of genius. Top effort AAA+++

  12. Leevi Graham said about 5 hours later:

    Sebastian,

Any ideas why this would be occuring? It seems to run fine on my pc. Do you think turning the sIFR off by default maybe a good idea…

  13. Tristan Dunn said about 5 hours later:

Such an excellent theme. I’m glad I didn’t enter now. Not that I would have beat it, but I would have felt bad if I did. You deserve to win.

  14. Marco said about 5 hours later:

There’s absolutely no problem with Safari here. But then again I have a dual 2.7Ghz machine which may ehm.. help.

What I do know is that even with version 8, flash is still kinda slow and a CPU hog on Mac OS X. I get around 5% cpu here which is still a lot on this machine.

Disabling sIFR reduces it to around 1 or 2% so I guess we’ve got the culprit. Like I told you on MSN, there may be just a tad too many sIFR headlines in it.

Other than that: I’ve told you on MSN and I’ll say it here as well: If I have to beaten by someone it better be you. Your theme kicks ass and I know you’ve worked on it just as hard as I did on mine. Therefore you’re definitely one of those who really deserves to win.

    May the best theme win!

  15. Claudio said about 7 hours later:

Very cool theme, thank you :-)

  16. Joh_Paar said about 7 hours later:

It’s a great design, very well laid out, harmonizing colors, though it seems a bit heavy in two ways. First one is, that scrolling isn’t smooth compared for example to the typogarden site and the loading time has already been discussed. And second is, that personally I think there are too many functions at first sight, it’s not too easy to focus on the content. It might be better to hide the advanced functions behind a very basic and reduced interface and allow it to be switched to “pro” or “advanced” mode.

  17. Marco said about 8 hours later:

    Another note on the slowdown:

My own weblog also takes 6% cpu usage on my machine which is rather high.

My advice to Leevi would be to cut down the amount of sIFR headers. If you have to many it gets slow. You could for example eliminate the ones in the sidebar and replace those with normal ones maybe.

  18. Leevi Graham said about 8 hours later:

Hi all, thanks for your comments so far they will help improve the design as a whole. After the comp, or before if im allowed and it is ok’d by all you guys I would like to remove the sifr headlines for H4 and below. This should speed the theme up alot and improve overall preformance. I think its best for the contest overall and will not drastically change my entry.. What does everyone think? Is it ok with you guys?

  19. Marco said about 8 hours later:

My advice would be to use sIFR only for the main titles and the sidebar titles and no lower level headings. More than 8 or so sIFR headings on a site makes things slow on lower spec computers, especially when they’re macs.

  20. domosapien said about 10 hours later:

I’ve never heard anyone complain that a design is inferior because their computer is slow. (Bandwidth is different)

Leevi, you did excellent work and are a champ to take the silly criticism.

  21. Jan Prill said about 11 hours later:

Definitly one of my favorites. For me, as I’m blogging in my native language it has one downside though: Special characters like german umlauts (ü, ä, ö) won’t make it into headlines. Are these translated to images by rmagick or anything like this? Maybe I need to have a look at the readme…

    regards Jan

  22. Marco said about 11 hours later:

That can be fixed by telling Flash to include accented characters when saving the font’s swf file from the sIFR base template.

  23. smerickson said about 13 hours later:

And we have a winner. . . Outstanding work!

  24. Martin May said about 16 hours later:

This is my favorite. You deserve the grand prize!

  25. Leevi Graham said about 18 hours later:

    Jan:

You can find out more about sIFR by looking at the sIFR documentation found here: http://www.mikeindustries.com/sifr/ Also if you want i can create a new .swf file for you that includes special characters

    Cheers Leevi

Amazing. Love the Live Search functionality with the pull-down box.

  28. gg said 2 days later:

Just awesome…. expect your IBook soon ;)

  29. Eric said 2 days later:

I agree with everyone that your theme is AWESOME, but only as a web developer.

As a user I think it’s way too busy. How many real web users really care about all the cool tricks he’s packed into the theme, or even understand half of it? All they care about is the content and design.

Other than the header there isn’t a lot of seperation between different section (just a thin line). It makes it easy for my eyes to stray over to the big headers in the navigation away from the content.

The design itself is ok, but far from anything special or unique. Once you scroll past the page header it’s all pretty boring. There is nothing that makes me say “wow”.

This theme reminds of the difference between yahoo and google. Yahoo is a great site with lots of features, but in the end all people really want to do is search. Features are great, but Google proved that simple can be powerful.

Still a great entry. I just don’t think it deserves all of this fawning from the web development community.

  30. Ezra Zygmuntowicz said 2 days later:

I love this theme Levi! I am using it on my blog right now. One problem though, The little buttons at the very top for help or to change the type size or layout do not work. Evey single one of them throws you to a javascript-error page. Take a look: http://brainspl.at Is there any way to turn those off or make them work somehow?

  31. Leevi Graham said 2 days later:

    Hi Ezra,

Are you using a trunk version.. If not try and download the theme again. It should be ok..

    Cheers Leevi

  32. Jason Morrison said 3 days later:

    this is sex-ay!

  33. Leevi Graham said 3 days later:

    Hey Guys,

I have listened to all your demands about CPU speed and sIFR and acted on them. You can now download a sIFR free version of origami @ http://typo2.leevigraham.com/ . This theme is faster, and has the sIFR options removed from the titles.

    Enjoy.

  34. Marco said 3 days later:

Eric, You may very well be right. I mentioned this too when I was talking to Leevi. After the spectacular top section something is ‘missing’. What that is though, we don’t know.

Still: This is definitely one of the very best entries in this contest. But I’m sure most of us will agree here.

  35. leevi graham said 3 days later:

what theme is perfect … he he he :)

  36. Mark Davies said 8 days later:

no surprises here – just the usual Leevi Graham CSS genius at work. At ease gentlemen.
